The iceberg and more…
This post is a combination of parts of Wednesday and Thursday morning. Of course you know that I had to check on the kits… On Wednesday morning I was only able to grab two quick photos before they took off scrambling over the rocks and out of my vision!
This is the beautiful pitcher plant which thrives on Fogo Island - especially in wet or marshy areas. it is Newfoundland and Labrador’s provincial flower.
As I walking Wednesday morning I kept hearing the song of the Yellow Warbler… it amazes me that we see them at home but to think of coming all of these extra distance is even more mind boggling. Took me forever but I finally spotted this beauty!
I don’t know what this beautiful plant is…I saw this in one of the fields I was walking through -
I heard the song of a Horned Lark and could not for the life of me spot him…. I pulled out my phone to confirm that I was hearing a Horned Lark and sure enough - it said it was there singing away. I set up and waited - and then I heard the song behind me. I kept waiting…. and guess who flew over my head and landed in the perfect spot - you guessed it! This stunning male -
Yesterday morning was very overcast and windy and cold - about 38 degrees Fahrenheit. My wonderful guide picked me up at 4:30 and I asked him to take me back to Tilting to see if the sky would pop for another chance of a sunrise shot. I also had other shots on my mind at that spot if the sun cooperated. We hustled up to our spot and the wind was blowing like crazy - the sky was just totally filled with clouds. He was game for either staying or heading out - I said let’s do Plan B. So off we went back down the trail and hopped back into his car. He took us on a gorgeous hike out to Wild Cove. We were hoping to see a caribou - but no luck. The walk was breathtaking and we were in the woods and out of the wind for a good part of it which we both appreciated. The next shot is my guide coming back towards me as he had gone ahead to scout out to see if any caribou were around up ahead - no luck.
As I waited for him to walk back to me I turned and took a couple of quick shots while I was standing at Wild Cove to show you just how wild the sea was - the wind was howling.
Just as we got back to his car the sun popped out and was absolutely spectacular. He knew that I wanted another chance of photographing the iceberg so off we went to Lion’s Den which would put us at a closer location to the iceberg than where I had photographed it the previous day.. We only hiked a short distance at Lion’s Den in order to get some extra elevation. What I have learned is that icebergs frequently get grounded as there are sooooo many islands everywhere. This one had been grounded since I arrived on Monday and I wanted another chance to photograph it.. You never know when or if it will become dislodged and move along or just stay grounded and ultimately melt.
How majestic is this????
I then asked him to take me to a spot I had been to the previous day where I had tried getting the iceberg in the background of a landscape shot. I had not liked how they came out so I wanted another try at it. So once again off we went - and I am much happier with these results.
As if all of this wasn’t enough guess who we saw on the way back to the Inn? This is a smaller member of the same family - no siblings were in sight and neither was mom. I just LOVE that it has a long blade of grass stuck to the top of its head! How darn cute is that?
Adorable!
I could not have asked for anything more….
After I took the above shot he got up and went up and over the other side. I walked quietly around to that side and couldn’t spot him… until he popped up practically in front of me!
After this shot he went up and over the rocks and out of my view and it was time for a cappuccino and breakfast for me… :)
