An Irish sunrise like no other
Thank you so much for your comments via posts, text, VM, and email about my first Fogo Island post - I am so thrilled that you enjoyed it and were touched by it. I will definitely have more photos of the the fox kits for you - but not in this post.
The first Irish settlers of the town of Tilting on Fogo Island arrived in the mid-1800’s. I asked my wonderful guide to take me Tuesday morning to Tilting to see my first sunrise there for two reasons - 1) because the Irish settled here and, 2) it is on the east cost of the Fogo and a great place to try and see a sunrise. He arrived at 4:15 and off we went! We parked along a trail and then headed to a beautiful knoll to set up and watch the sunrise over Pigeon Island. We wandered around a little so I could get my bearings and decide where I might want to set up… I just love this time of the morning wondering what might unfold.
On Fogo there is this incredible non-profit organization that supports artists. The chosen artists who are from around the world come and stay for two to three months at a time to be immersed in the island and to work on their craft. There are a handful of studios around the island that are for these artists. I tell you all of this not only because it is such an amazing program but also because the first shot in this post is one of these studios.
Right after the above shot I turned around and immediately scrambled to where I knew I wanted to be … I set up low behind a rock and I honestly cannot adequately put into words what unfolded but I will do what I can for you…. I have never made an entire post of one sunrise… well, here is my first and maybe only post of one sunrise.
As soon as I set up my guide came over to me and said…. Cheryl, you are set up looking directly at Ireland across the Atlantic…. So here my dear friends, family, and acquaintances, is an Irish sunrise like no other…
I knew that this was the best opportunity for me to try my new wide angle lens so I changed lenses quickly…. and then this happened…
I could see something so incredibly different happening in the sky that I changed quickly back to my go-to landscape lens to hopefully capture what was in the process of happening. I have never seen anything like this in my life… a portion of the sky opened up and created a clear and pure space for the most incredible refraction of light to occur…
The sky then got even darker…
I zoomed in on that “clear space” as much as I could just because I have never seen anything like it and chances are never will again…….
This sunrise, on my first morning on Fogo Island, will be one that I will carry with me forever. Not only Irish eyes are smiling…
My guide and I walked quietly back to the car because what is there to say when you witness something so profoundly beautiful?
As he was driving back to the Inn he pulled over so that I could take these last couple of shots to finish off this deeply moving morning.
A morning like no other…
