Some kind of wonderful!
This post is a combination of two of my most recent outings - this past Tuesday morning and this morning. I knew the terrible heat wave was heading our way so I made sure to get out Tuesday morning. As soon as I arrived at Bullitt I knew that I was going to head up to the upper field and hope to hear and see the Indigo Buntings… as soon as I set up along the path I could hear buntings to my left and right - but further away than I had hoped for. I stayed put for quite some time hoping they would move closer to me - no luck. I finally decided to pick up and set up further along the path - I no sooner set up when this spectacular male Indigo Bunting flew right in front of me and landed to my left. I quickly spun around and was able to catch this shot of him belting out his beautiful song! Just incredible…
After he flew away I decided to take the loop through the woods… I was taunted by so many birds that I couldn’t spot! They were all singing away - the songs were so beautiful. I kept going and they kept singing without me getting any good photo ops. I decided to head back up to the upper field for another try up there. I walked a short distance on the path in the field… and decided to set up. As I was scanning the field to my right - look who came out of nowhere to my left! I just barely had time to swing my camera around in time to catch this shot! :)
As quickly as I could I dialed back my zoom to catch the following series - this was some kind of wonderful!
The next shot is the last shot of this series and this morning. I was breathless after this encounter. Once I caught my breath I decided it was time to head home - with a very full heart.
I knew I couldn’t be out long at all this morning - I do not tolerate heat and humidity like we are currently having. I promised myself to do only one loop and then to head home. It was already so steamy and the sun wasn’t even up…
Just as I arrived in the upper field at Bullitt this stunning Field Sparrow landed to my right.
I then heard the unmistakable beautiful song of the Indigo Bunting. I walked right towards the tree where I have often seen them this year… and sure enough here he was on a much lower branch than usual - belting it out!
Because he didn’t care that I had just moved a little closer I decided to try a video with my camera for you. Here you go - turn up the volume!
Right after he flew away I decided to head right up to the wooded part of the trail - I knew I couldn’t stay much longer - it was so hot and very buggy. I was about 2/3rds of the way through the woods when I stopped dead in my tracks - I heard the most beautiful duet by two Wood Thrushes! Are you kidding me? I took my phone out and recorded a few seconds for you while I kept scanning to try and find these incredible birds. Here you go -
As soon as I finished recording with my phone I picked up and moved a little further along the path and set up….. and then I scored, I spotted one of the Wood Thrushes!
He sang so clearly and even louder than before - it gives me chills describing it to you -
Next thing I knew this Wood Thrust landed up and to my left - belting it out!
Once I caught my breath and my heart settled down I picked up and headed out of the woods and down to the first part of the path in the field - just in time to hear the buzzing sound of a Cedar Waxwing up overhead. He landed right in front of me for a few seconds -
Over to my right a beautiful Song Sparrow landed in this gorgeous light - with a feather coming out! That must be very annoying - don’t you think?
As I was heading to the parking area I spotted two Downy Woodpeckers - I set up.
I thought to myself - I bet one is going to feed the other…
Sure enough - that is exactly what happened -
Some kind of wonderful…
