Same day - more!
I realized after I made yesterday’s post that I had a few more early morning shots for you. These are from right after I left the cove and was heading back.
I have never seen or heard so many Willets as I did on this trip. Just as I was leaving the cove I heard more Willets and was trying to locate them when all of a sudden …..I scored!
After that amazing show I continued on…. still hearing more Willets… I thought - how can I not see them?? I kept scanning high and low… and then spotted this one….
and this one…
I quickly looked back towards the cove - as you can see the tide was higher now… and saw this very nice young man working for quahogs. We had briefly said hello earlier as this is his favorite spot and he told me - I never see anyone out here - good for you for finding it! :)
I kept hearing the unmistakable gorgeous song of Yellow Warblers… you would think they would always just be so obvious to see - well, they aren’t always. So often they are just behind the leaves, branches, pine needles, etc and are hard for me to spot… thankfully this one decided to belt out his glorious song in full view!
After I returned from my early morning outing I went out again around mid-morning with friends and a guide to a couple of different ponds…The area is known for Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets… Practically right away we spotted this beautiful Snowy Egret which had been in a far back pond and decided to fly into the pond right in front of us!
I tracked the flight of the Snowy Egret - it didn’t go far… just as it was landing in the tall grasses behind the pond I saw the unmistakable flight pattern of a Green Heron come up out of the grasses near where the Egret had landed! The Green Heron landed for a split second on this rock…
And then thankfully he also decided that the near pond was the place to be….. :)
Another Snowy Egret landed in this tree.
Back with the Green Heron… clearly he was in hunting mode…
I absolutely love all of the markings on Green Herons… and I so love how they can look short and compact to well… like this!
Once again a Snowy Egret in the near pond… they are stunning ……
Snowy Egrets have wingspans up to around 41”
Out of the corner of my eye I saw this Osprey flying up into this tree1
A Yellow Legs decided to see what all of the fuss was about in this pond… it did not bother the Egret.
These last three shots are the Green Heron continuing on the hunt… I never did see it catch its snack but I am sure that it did at some point… he was so determined…
I loved that he fluffed his feathers…
Now that is a heck of a stretch….. !
This post and the previous post were all before noontime on the same morning… migration is in full swing!
