Off to the races!
This is not a Sandhill Crane post…there will be more but not today. This morning I went to the Edge Hill Conservation area in Ashfield - another spot that I love. Temperature was perfect - 44 degrees and no wind. Once the sun came up the sky was either cloud filled or full on sun - there was no in between this morning. I was having a very hard time getting any good looks at all of the wonderful birds singing and flitting around. They were enjoying teasing me and staying behind leaves etc. I kept at it and finally found a spot that I thought might bring me some luck. I was up the hill from the little pond looking down towards the fields, trees and bushes… just waiting for something to be in the clear… when all of a sudden below me a gorgeous young doe and her fawn were running full speed in my direction!
It was so fun for me to be at this angle and height to be able to look down at them as they were running full speed!
How sweet is that little one??
Then mom changed the angle of her direction - I figured she was heading towards the woods. I quickly moved a couple of steps to my left and moved behind some pine trees and just shot away as quickly as I could.
They stopped dead in their tracks so mom could look back towards the direction they had just came from. I quickly looked up to try and see if I could see whatever it was that spooked them but I did not see anything. I decided to just keep focused on this beautiful doe and her very young fawn…
And then off again - full speed! Amazing what it takes for that little one to try and keep up!
Mom stopped still and stood like a statue until the little one caught up. I often see deer when I am out but I have never had the good fortune to see a pair sprinting like this together for such a distance - until today….
Mom took off and the little one needed an extra second or two for a little more rest.
Time to catch up!
Wow!
Made it back to mom!
Off again! Mom was not messing around… she wanted out of that field….
I took this shot right through the branches of a pine tree - and in a split second they safely entered the woods and I lost sight of them.
Just so beautiful!
