Fogo -Around the corner…
What a gift it is to have the time to wander… and to keep going around the next corner. Today was a morning of going around corner after corner to discover one magical moment after another. I stepped out at 4:30 to a temperature in the high fifties and a sky that held the promise of an amazing start to the day. As soon as I started my walk I could hear Horned Larks… but it was not light enough for me to spot them. I told myself to look again in this spot on the way back.
I then wanted to get to this spot for this lighting - here you go.
I continued on up the road and around the next corner to see the sunrise- the only sound was of the tide coming in, a little wind, and some birdsong - perfection.
Come along with me as we keep exploring around the next corner and the next …
I took a little path off of the road …
I kept hearing the loudest peeping sounds - I honestly didn’t know who was hiding from me. I turned on my Merlin app - Spotted Sandpipers! I have never been so close to them without other sounds. Where were they?? I kept walking along the path which was bringing me closer to this glorious cove…. their peeps were getting louder and louder as they were talking back and forth to one another. I set up and waited… and then this one popped up right in front of me - incredible!
Two of then flew off out over the edge of the water and around yet another corner - one was hiding somewhere behind me. I decided to turn around - to see this!
Further long the road -
I went to a spot that I had gone to the other day to see if a Spotted Sandpiper might be where I saw him the other day…. sure enough!
I said to myself - head back to the cove where I had spotted a Greater Yellow Legs the other day. I arrived, scanned the area, didn’t see anyone - and then waited. And guess who showed up? A Yellow Legs and then a Spotted Sandpiper also flew in! The Spotted Sandpiper is the one with the rump bobbing up and down continually… how can you not smile watching that?
I decided it was time to go find the horned larks…. and walked past these…
As I was walking back I kept thinking about the Horned Larks - I arrived back at the spot where I had heard them earlier. I heard them instantly - and then saw a flash of movement on the top of the knoll!
I set up… just willing him to head my way. It was as if a magnet brought this guy to me - from the top of the knoll he came so close to me that I am sure he could hear me breathing… it was like a dream unfolding right in front of me.
Start to finish for this morning outing - 4 hours of bliss…
This post is dedicated to all of our dear friends to our north….
